Apart from frequent subsidences where roads just disappear down the side of the valley which results in huge detours our roads are generally in excellent repair. But our big problem is rockfalls. Its common to find large boulders and debris in the road that you have to clear and get through. Three weeks ago we were off to Albi and driving through Ambialet where the road is blasted out of the sheer valley walls, taking a blind bend I had to swerve to avoid a lot of fairly large boulders and debris in the road, I clipped one and there was an enormous crash of wheel/tyre/suspension. I thought, "thats a new alloy rim and tyre" and we have brand new snow tyres that are very expensive, around 200 Euro's a corner, fitted. Fitting isn't free here. They charge aound 20 euro's per tyre, then about 100 euro's to do the tracking. Luckily I got away with it. It sounded worse than it was but you could see evidence of the coming together on the tyre wall.
About 6 years ago on exactly the same bend I had to slam my brakes on as a Peugeot a few minutes earlier had had a coming together with a rock about the size of a supermarket trolley. It was right mess. The driver was okay and was on the phone to the police and the breakdown service. We had to do a 10 point turn and double back adding about 20km to our journey down single track roads. You never venture out here without SatNav.
