I had an argument on Sunday...my daughter and her hubby said the Onlt Fools "Chandelier" comedy sketch was the best ever, I said the two Ronnies "4(ork) candles/handles was.
Strictly speaking I was right anyway as the Only Fools was a show not a sketch, but they said they had never seen the 4 candles sketch. I told them to you tube it and come back and tell me I was right.
Not heard anything yet.

Oh I thought I’d already replied to this message. When I saw the title I immediately thought ’four candles’
The writing is sublime. I believe it was Ronnie Barker using a pseudonym
OF&Hs to me is slapstick. I don’t find it funny at all. How it lasted 20 plus years is a mystery to me

The chandelier episode is brilliant. An entire 30-minute show leading to one visual gag. Comedy writing at it's finest.
However, Four Candles is genius. It consistently tops the lists when people are polled about their favourite sketch, and rightly so.

I've watched so much comedy on BBC (predominantly) over the years, with Morecambe and Wise, Reggie Perrin and Monty Python among my favourites.
The one scene which comes to mind, mainly because I laughed so much I nearly fell off the settee, was in the Fawlty Towers episode about the Gourmet Evening. Basil is rushing around in his Austin 1100 trying to get the food from his restaurant-owner friend because the chef at the hotel is pissed and in love with Manuel; Basil stalls the car, which then naturally refuses to restart. He leaps out of the car and screams something along the lines of "Right! I've warned you about this - I'm going to give you a damn good thrashing!" He disappears offscreen for several seconds then bounds back into sight holding a branch and proceeds to give the car a damn good thrashing! The timing is exquisite.
I realise that it's not a sketch as such, but it appeals to my attitude towards inanimate objects which constantly let me down, and I can quite easily see me doing something similar.

"Dont mention the war" The whole Fawlty Towers was so Pythonesque ( does that word exist?)
