Almost every commercial channel has recently been showing adverts designed to raise awareness of and funds for dementia research. One of them relates how dementia sufferers "die over and over again". Not very pleasant viewing for those who have recently been diagnosed. Whenever we watch these channels I have to try to remember to grab the remote at the beginning of every ad break. Sometimes I forget.
So last night I was pleased that there were two programmes, The Repair Shop and Race Across the World, which we both enjoy and they were on ad-free BBC1. Unfortunately both programmes included stories from participants about relatives who had been diagnosed with dementia and then had died within 3 years. Luckily Sarah was busy trying to order some boots off eBay (something which took her the better part of three hours!) and so wasn't concentrating on the telly.
Sarah and I both recognise the need to raise funds and awareness, but it is draining to be constantly on edge waiting for the next ad or story to tell her what fate might be awaiting her. I wish that those responsible could find ways of doing this that were kinder to those who have recently been diagnosed and still have most of their faculties, and I've told the Alzheimer's Society as much.

Isn't September Dementia awareness month? Fingers crossed the adverts will quieten down in a couple of weeks. No help for you now I understand and it must be so heartbreaking to have these as a constant reminder of what is to come and for this I am so sorry. Hugs xx
