My Nam had a Poultry shop in Blake Lane next to the Samson and Lion in Bordesley Green. When we used to visit her house she always had green and maggotty pheasants hanging from a nail in the kitchen door.
But she used to make her own Jellied Eels in a small galvanised bath and sell them in the shop. I used to love them as a nipper. When I was working in China smoked eel was on the menu of most restaurants and I could not resist them. I have had them a lot in Germany too.
The last time I had jellied eels was about 5 years ago from the Kershaws Man with his basket in a pub in Nottingham. I took them back to my hotel room and ate them in bed. Such opulence.

Three things about "Fip 'n' chips" as my mom used to call it:
1. It's easy to make batter at home. Flour, lager straight from the fridge and salt and pepper.
2. Our chippy, owned by Newtonabbotblue Nick, usually has hake on the menu, and it's the cheapest option. AND it's delicious.
3. The best fish and chips I ever had was monkfish and chips at Rick Stein's chippy on Padstow harbour. But it was horribly expensive.

We cannot do batter. Our deep fat fryer just does not get hot enough and just ends up as a soggy oil saturated mess. We could do it in a wok as we have a 6kw wok burner.
The Chinese I worked with in Nottingham wanted to do a "posh" restaurant. One weekend they planned a trip to Padstow and just turned up at Rick Steins on spec only to be told that the wait would be 6 months and would they care to book a table. A couple of weeks later they did Restaurant Sat Bains and blew about a fortnights food allowance in one night. They were given 10 quid a night. Another weekend they just jumped on a flight to Dublin for the craic. They were a tad impetuous.

I do like a bit of fish.
Can't stand batter though, so I steer clear of chip shop fish. I'd rather have a pie.
