Friday...
It will be day 6 of Pete being without his suitcase. We have spent all week sat in the house waiting for it to arrive in vain. It has been in Brives now for 3 days without moving. It is promised again for today but as yet is still not on the van for delivery. If it does not come today it will not be until Tuesday next week at the earliest as Monday is a Public holiday. Pete goes home on Wednesday
The nurse will come in mid-morning to change the dressing on KP's infected cyst. It was huge but is now looking much better. I need to phone the hospital in St Affrique today to get him another appointment for Tuesday.
A wander down the bar tonight. It opened for the first time on Wednesday after the owners had a weeks holiday.
Try to book a table for the weekend at a restaurant but everywhere is still closed from the winter.
Fish chips and mushy peas for tea.
Saturday...
Go off somewhere after the nurse has been. Maybe the Chateau at St Izaire or Najac
Perhaps a restaurant for a meal if we can find one, or Chrissie will cook Chicken Chasseur.
Sunday...
Repeat Saturday.
Have a good one everybody.

Friday: Tea at Jean's, bath, telly, bed. Saturday: either shopping early or postpone it until Sunday as Jean will want to watch the world's most dysfunctional family wasting millions that should be spent on better things. Gardening and a walk.
Sunday: possibly shopping, then gardening and a long walk - we haven't had a decent walk (over three hours) for ages, so as a reward this will terminate either at the Tyn y Capel in Minera or the King's Head (ironic, eh?) in Bwlchgwyn.
Monday: watch Blues get torn apart for the last time this season. I don't have a day off as the Monday I would normally work is moved to a Tuesday instead. My boss is horrible 😁

Tonight: Supposed to be going to a Thank You Reception for volunteers at the Rugby Club, but Sarah's having a bad day, and tbh I don't feel very sociable myself. Spag Bol.
Tomorrow: Avoid the coronation, but hope that those who enjoy that sort of thing have a good time. Coq au Gewürztraminer (couldn't get any decent Riesling)
Sunday: The lads from Dawlish who play for the rugby club have challenged the lads from Teignmouth to a game, so if Sarah is having a good day I'll pop down and watch that. Which means that Sunday lunch will be Sunday supper - beef, yorkies etc.
Monday: Who knows?

Tonight: Drive to Daventry to collect eldest Granddaughter. She really is having a horrendous time at the moment with her mental health. It's absolutely heartbreaking to hear her breaking down and she always calmer when she's at ours. Maybe it helps that our house is much calmer too. It also gives her mom a break (she is emotionally drained with it all) as well as the other kids. Tomorrow. Avoiding the Coronation. Not that I don't support the Royal Family, I do, and I understand that it's a once in a lifetime event, but the coverage is annoying already. I'll watch the highlights Saturday night, when they're not inteviewing the world and his wife just because KC the third spoke to them when he was 8. I also don't agree with Camila being crowned queen so I'll be fast forwarding that bit. Need to go shopping for Sunday afternoon food at some time. Sunday. Allotment for a couple of hours in the morning. Family BBQ in the afternoon. Monday. Last footy game of the season. Sheff Utd are already promoted so hopefully they won't beat us too badly.

"Coq au Gewürztraminer"
1979 is a long, long time ago, but I seem to remember Gewürztraminer being a delicious wine, and certainly second to none in the cooking stakes.

"Coq au Gewürztraminer" 1979 is a long, long time ago, but I seem to remember Gewürztraminer being a delicious wine, and certainly second to none in the cooking stakes. When I was a student in Strasbourg it was the wine you might order if you were on a special night out and you felt a bit flush. Most of the time we made do with Edelzwicker (a blended, very cheap white wine), Sylvaner (a cheap but delicious white wine which is almost unheard of here) or Riesling. Gewürz is, as you say, wonderful, and I wasn't happy about having to cook with it, but in Morrison's yesterday I found a German Riesling which was 12% (instead of the usual 9%) so I'll be cooking with that and drinking the Gewürz.

When I went on the exchange visit from Lucas the first week was spent at a hostel-type place near Stuttgart. We went on a visit to a winery which didn't include any tasting. When the head of Bosch's apprentice scheme (Herr Hummel, what a great name!) heard we'd not had any tasting he went crackers. He ordered loads of different bottles sent to the hostel and we had a glorious evening sampling them - him most of all. It's nearly 45 years ago now, but I do remember that Sylvaner was a particular favourite.

My best experience of Sylvaner was when a Luxembourger mate of ours took us up into the Vosges mountains in Alsace just after the first snow of the winter. We had to park up because he hadn't got winter tyres or chains, but we had a great walk through the forests in 18 inches of snow before heading back to the lovely town of Obernai where we went into a restaurant and, because we were pretty hard up, just ordered tarte à l'oignon and a pichet (jug) of Sylvaner. Sheer heaven. I've loved tarte à l'oignon ever since, but as I'm useless at pastry have never been able to recreate that wonderful meal, and haven't seen Sylvaner in this country for 20-30 years. Happy days.

Jayne's mum has some of what she calls German wine glasses - they are Sylvaner glasses, with the green coiled stem and base.
