What was that Dream Theatre piece you recommended last night?
I should be able to find it on You Tube for a listen.
I still think Jordan Rudess is pretentious and completely up his own backside. And I want to get a pair of scissors to his silly beard. I do like John Petrucci though who comes across as a good chap when I have seen him interviewed.

The piece is called "Octavarium".
Three links here. The first one is the studio recording taken from the album of the same name, the second is a live video, and the third is our old friend The Daily Doug's take on it (spoiler alert: he likes it ... A LOT!)

Cheers Will. I will have a look at that later.
I have been watching Doug during the night. And a young lad called Dicon Disectional Reactions who does some very thoughtful reactions to all sorts of music.

I have just played the first clip. The opening was very Floyd-esque then was nothing like. Incredible percussion by Mike Portnoy. Very impressive piece but I just do not get James LaBrie. Cool name though. His soft cheese is pretty good.
And before you ask I am not keen on Rush either. I do like Neil Peart's (RIP) Percussion, but I feel his technical brilliance carries little emotion for me.
Just played the Live film and enjoyed it more. Rudess in places reminded me very much of Keith Emerson, which I guess I why you like them. In places he reminded me a lot of Benoit Widemann of Magma. Different genre but similar in many ways.
I will watch Doug in bed tonight.

Rudess quotes Emerson as one of his greatest inspirations. DT are often described as "prog metal" which helps to explain LaBrie's singing style. If you want to see Portenoy in his pomp, you really should watch the live version, although you will have to put up with Jordan at his theatrical best in that first section of the piece.
I'm absolutely mesmerised by the whole song. All five of the musicians are masterful in my opinion, and I listen to it three or four times a week.

I have watched the live clip, Pay attention.... Ah, Prog Metal, which explains why they auditioned a couple of metal drummers. I have watched all 3 films a number of times as I was interested in the process. The one who interests me is John Myung. A very introverted character. Both you and Sam may like to watch this. youtu.be/rJON9-494UE I am more of a Jazz Rock listener. I like to immerse myself, and after 50 years of owning it my go to piece is still Septober Energy by Centipede. They include your old pal Robert Fripp. Unfortunately he did not play on this as he was too busy doing the production, which isn't very good in my humble opinion. I know its on you tube, I'll see if I can find it.

Found it. youtu.be/4aLrvQjTYV4Its a long piece, a double album. This is side 2 which for me includes the best passages. If you look at the credits you will see a number of King Crimson and Soft Machine members. And Julie Tippett, married to founder Keith Tippett and better known as Julie Driscoll who recorded "This Wheels On Fire" with the Brian Auger Trinity in the 60's. I know you are going to hate it.

I loved Dougs reaction, more than the music unfortunately.
Chacun a son gout.

What a performance! What a performer! I've watched the first of the audition video, and I'm not surprised Mangini got the job. He looked like a Doppelganger for Portnoy, especially performance-wise. I'll watch the others while I'm cooking lunch later. As for Doug, I love his enthusiasm, which is almost childlike (in a good way!).
