Why aren't the progam designers being taken to task over this, after all it was them that screwed up in the first instance.
It would appear hat the post office management tried to cover up their mistake.
Why should the government have to fork out the justified compensation for being sold a faulty product.
Fujitsu would appear to have got away with it.
Apparently, during trials there were issues and I believe, two post masters were prosecuted, even then for false accounting.
Why weren't alarms bells ringinng then, BUT maybe there were.

I think the issue is that, because the PO is owned by the government, and THEY, not Fujitsu, insisted that it wasn't a computer error, they are to blame. It was the PO who prosecuted the post masters. Not Fujitsu

BTW. What a great mini series 'Mr Bates takes on the PO' was!! If anyone ever gets the chance to see 'there she goes' on BBC iplayer. Another fabulous mini serier

It was the PO who prosecuted the post masters. Not Fujitsu At the end of the day, Fujitsu were employed to design a soft ware package that worked, it seems that it didn't work. They were paid mega-bucks to supply a fit for purpose package, they must carry some of the responsibility. I feel that the P.O. must have initially been told by Fujitsu, that there was not a problem and that the soft ware was O.K. By the time it MUST have been apparent that there was a problem, the ball was rolling and the PO mangement let it roll. Shirley, someone must have realised that so many postmasters could not have been fraudsters, I think that they did, but it was too late and too many senior managers tried to cover their own backsides and allowed the postmasters to be the fall guys. Sorry about not including postmistresses. Many backsides must be kicked, to the extent of criminal proceedings for their actions.

I get that but companies spend millions on software that isn't fit for purpose (look at Birmingham City Council and they couldn't afford it!) but the IT companies never take resonsibility for it

One would think if the Post Office employed so many "criminals" they need to shake their selection process or they were trying to cover up problems.
The P.O. does not need police intervention of prosecutions, so the CPS is not involved, they in effect take out a private prosecution, using their own lawers and barristors.

Remember the IT system the NHS was provided with that cost many millions and didn't work? If, during the next Zoom meeting, I asked you to guess who created that, you'd all be guaranteed a point.
Yet they STILL get government contracts - one only in the last couple of weeks. They immediately sub-contracted that one though, so that's ok.
Or it would be if they hadn't sub-contracted it to a company owned by Sunak's family 😡

It would appear that Fujitsu are at last accepting some responsibility for their involvement in the prosecutions.
It seems they knew about the issues and faults in their software.
"Patterson is asked if there is a moral obligation for Fujitsu to contribute to compensation.
"There is a moral obligation for the company to contribute," he reiterates.
He refers to the Horizon scandal as a "travesty" and says there are many parties involved.
The firm "has a part to play and to contribute to the redress... fund for the sub-postmasters", he says".
