Haven't been there for years. Early 80s I went there to buy Sarah a birthday present - she'd seen a jumper in Next in York when we'd visited and as the closest Next to Brum was Dudley I used my WMPTE travelcard to have a trip over there. Bought the jumper then had a bit of a pub crawl sampling some fine real ale. Seemed like a nice enough place then, but 40 years is a long time ...

If it's anything like my local High Street, or even my local shops now, it'll be full of take aways, turkish barbers, hairdressers, bookies. There was an article recently that said the poorer the residents the MORE convenient shops there were. Which is strange. You'd think if people were poor they couldn't afford take aways!!

Dugleys town centre biggest problem is that it neighbours Merry Hell. It therefore cannot attract big name stores, because they already have one in MH...the car parking in MH is free, whilst Dudleys carparking is anything but free. It then leaves empty shops. the council and landlords then rent them out to anyone at competive rents and rates.
I for one quite like Dudley centre, although late in the afternoon, it does have more that its fair share of drunks and gangs of troublesome kids.
Before Carol had her foray into local politics, she had a coffee shop/cafe in Cousins Furniture store, so we did have an affinity with Dudley, that may explain my liking for the place.

The first Mrs Mulvey worked at Russell's Hall Hospital for a few years when she first qualified. For most of that time she had a flat over some shops in Sedgley. We were in and out of Dudley all the time at that point and, although it was a bit run down, I definitely preferred it to Wolverhampton.
